It's only an excuse if you believe that we're not in that situation currently.Below this teaching schedule are all of the Zoom registration links for our online classes in 2022. The idea is probably that they'd rather have 10-15 well practiced plays they can rely upon rather than be awful at a wide variety of plays just because they want to make the offense harder for the opponent to figure out. So we're in a situation where they're probably sticking to 10-15 plays due to what I mentioned above and repping them over and over again with maybe an added couple of plays based on the week's gameplan.

Perhaps you might ask, "why make the offense more complicated than it needs to be? Why not run a different offense?" Just remember that we hired Scott Frost to specifically coach this offense and he is not someone who is going to coach the One Back Wide Zone from under center, just like Urban Meyer would not coach anything other than the spread offense because that is what they know how to coach. This is an offense that relies on specific timing and assignments from all players on the field, with failure to execute leading to busted plays and procedure penalties. Some of our starting skill players have gone down with injuries and have had to be replaced with true freshmen or people who have had to switch positions to fill in a spot on the field. We also have a redshirt freshman currently leading the offense. We have an offense that relies on tempo, motion, and a wide variety of formations that all includes terminology like "H Lunar O Y-Peel Hello X Drive" (all of this is derived from the Chip Kelly offense). But it probably would be unwise to complicate the playcalling if a majority of our young starters are still trying to learn the playbook. We probably win 37-21, but if we manage to have a passing game (we won't) we might put up 40+ points.
Still, we are at home, and if we limit ourselves to 6 or less penalties and 2 or less turnovers, we should win the game with a sizeable but not completely comfortable lead. That would be great for us if we could consistently catch balls in the middle of the field or further. Their pass defense is not good, and their defender rules seem to be sitting back, letting the pass be completed, and then make the tackle. That also means we're still going to see issues with playcalling and sustaining drives in the 2nd half-assuming Illinois is able to make adjustments or defend well in their base package.
Perhaps we show a unique formation in the 2nd half but we call timeout before the snap so that Iowa has to prepare for it. We have the Iowa game coming up so I fully expect a limited set of playcalls to minimize what will be put on film. They also missed two field goals from medium distance so their kicking game is not completely reliable. Illinois will rely on Isaiah Williams for yardage, but his strength is not in his passing accuracy and he's still inexperienced: he got flagged for intentional grounding on their final drive with no defensive pressure on him.
Illinois is coming off a win against Rutgers, but they needed a late interception from Noah Vedral to get it done. The most Illinois stat of all time is Isaiah Williams, in his first start at QB, rushed 31 times for 195 yards to break the Illinois QB rushing record formerly held by.Isiah Williams, better known as "Juice" Williams.
